Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Hi all,

I've learned some html and css, ready to start making a website #knuckle cracking. My website is fully planned, I know exactly how each page should look.

So, I've installed Wordpress, couldn't find a theme that looked how I wanted it to, found one anyway and.... OMG! Not easy to use. And to fully customise I need to download and install a child theme? It's all starting to get far too complicated. I'm wondering if I should just scrap using Wordpress and do it from scratch, which currently looks quicker to me. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!!

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Hello @stevejfr

I have a few websites with WordPress, and, just like you, when I've started to use WordPress it looks like going from one problem to another, but, if you dedicate a bit of time to learn how to do it, you will see that the results are very satisfying.

Just as a small incentive, keep in mind that with WordPress it will be much easier to make your site to look good on any type of device (pc, tablet or mobile phone) than with html, and in our days, optimizing your site for mobile devices is extremely important.

Good luck.

🙂

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Hi @stevejfr,

My humble opinion for what it's worth? Don't touch Wordpress or any other CMS with a bargepole. Just look at all the problems here with Wordpress!

You download a plugin, that had dependencies, and ad infinity. It's a right PITAss by the looks of it.

Much easier to maintain a hand coded site, and much faster usually. Takes me around 5 mins to make an average size update.

Just type into Google... "Why is WordPress..." and see all the negative search results. Learn to code and you learn a real skill, not how to point and click and install yet more plugins. The new 'Kiddie scripters'

I know I'm now going to get some haters, but you know what? Think they have me confused with someone that cares. LOL Smiley Happy

A simple example is all the email type problems with Wordpress, Im left scratching my head. A simple html form + a not difficult (once you have done a few) php form handling program. Done! Plus you get to design everything how you like it. Full website in say four pages and few hundred lines of code, if that even.

I don't need anything to code it except a good text editor (I use Vim and BBedit) and the command line.

I don't need to purchase any email extras, addons, plugins, whatnots, dependencies...................

ahhhhh! Website form works beautifully!

Mind you, you'll always have your head in a book. I think the most important lesson I learned is that great programmers / developers don't expect code to work the first time round. They expect it to fail and then work out why, fixing each error until perfect.

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

@stevejfr, it may seem daunting at first, but stick with it. Once you've used WordPress for a bit, things will get much easier. I have built over 200 WP sites, and have moved just about all clients off of HTML sites (I was using Dreamweaver). The options for functionality are endless, in that there are so many plug-ins available.

The WP community is huge (over 25% of all websites, last I saw), so there are plenty of people to help you, numerous websites with helpful info, etc.

Knowing HTML and CSS is a plus, because you'll use those, even on a WP site (such as for customizing the stylesheet). Just about everything I build is custom work, starting with Genesis themes (worth looking into: http://www.studiopress.com/). If you buy into Genesis, then you also have access to their forum, with plenty of q&a, step-by-step guidance and how-to instructions for each theme, etc.

Be patient, it will be worth it!

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

First off let me just say that my first choice for development is not defaulted to WordPress for some of the reasons you listed @stevejfr Like @Anonymous</a> I know that WordPress has some less than fun "issues" but @Adrian8 is right that it also has benefits.

I start with the project in mind first. If you know exactly what you want then WordPress might not be the best because despite the configuration ability you have there is still a basic structure in each implementation. Sometimes getting what you want into a WordPress structure and available themes is indeed problematic (as you have noted). I find that WordPress is best when your website fits into a category. Are you designing for a doctor's office, boutique, dj, lawyer, wedding photographer...? There are great themes that are highly specific and detailed themes ready to go with functions you wand and need, plus others you haven't thought of.

Your background in HTML ans CSS might make you the next great WordPress theme designer if you want to take the time to learn? Creating WordPress themes for scratch is one way of getting what you want while also utilizing what is best about WordPress. Hope that helps?

...turns out that my two cents is worth less or more depending on the current exchange rate.

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the useful replies! Pros from @Adrian8 and @webdiva, cons from @Anonymous</a>, and @rd making me dither 😉 I know exactly what the website needs to look like - and I've agreed it with my client already (whoops!) It's for a vintner, and it's going to be in English and German. And I don't want something that looks like every other Wordpress site.....

I might perservere with Wordpress for a bit, yay Youtube.... If I do give up on Wordpress and decide to write it from scratch, what's the best way for me to get my website up and running from cPanel?

Hi @stevejfr,

What do you need to know first? Smiley Happy

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Hi @Anonymous</a>,

Oh wow...! Thanks 🙂 Well.... I'm thinking maybe I write the website from scratch. Because I don't need it to anything complicated, no online shop. Just text, pictures and links. And it'll be more fun if I write it myself. Probably sorting out the media rules for respsonsive layout will be the hardest.

So, I currently have a website set up under Wordpress which I access from cPanel. How do I scrap this and set it up so I can write it directly?

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Hi,

Just leave this until you are ready to go. Easiest to take it a step at a time. You first need to make a few important bookmarks that will help you enormously: First one http://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_intro.asp

You will learn to love this site.

Secondly unless you already have one, get yourself a good programmers text editor. Notice I didn't say word processor, totally unsuitable. https://notepad-plus-plus.org for windows, or text wrangler or (BBedit my choice) from here: http://www.barebones.com . Then who could forget Vim http://www.vim.org but Vim or Vi as it's sometimes still called already comes installed with Macs or Unix systems.

That will keep you occupied until I have made the kid's tea Smiley Happy

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Glad that you were able to come to a decision @stevejfr and you are in the right place! If you get stuck hopefully you already see that there are some top quality people that are willing to help if you are willing to learn. Please don't hesitate to search around the Community a bit for some already existing posts and if you need more help you know how to create a new topic. I'm sure that the questions you would have are queries that would benefit others using WordPress for the first time.

You found a project that managed to combine geek stuff, Germans AND wine? NICE! Since you are dealing with a website with that needs to contain multi-language I would highly suggest wpml.org I almost exclusively use them on my multi-language websites and find them to be excellent. I long ago chose their pay once, get everything lifetime unlimited plan and I have yet to regret it. The really nice thing is if you are doing non-profit websites they have a free license you can get for the web design project.

Great suggestions on the text editors @Anonymous</a>, I'd like to throw my editor of choice in UltraEdit. I have used UltraEdit for almost 18 years and love, love, love it!

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Hi @Anonymous</a>,

I am trying to build my own website from scratch. I did not realize that GoDaddy did not offer this as an option when purchasing the domain. How do I go about getting to the blank canvas that is my domain and coding/ designing my website without paying a monthly fee to an outside website builder/ host? I am somewhat familiar with the coding aspects and can research what is unknown, but my main struggle is getting to that blank canvas without ads popping up geared towards tweaking my domain...

Thanks in advance!

Re: Use Wordpress or build a website from scratch?

Hi, yes,

When you purchase hosting you will see adds asking if you want to add this or that..... just ignore them and go straight to your basket and pay. Not clicking on any adds along the way. Then you have your 'blank canvas'

Go Picasso!

Hi, My website was previously uploaded content to the http:/docs folder.  I have created a new website in wordpress, how do I get my domain to resolve to the wordpress site and not the previous html files?
